The first one, Iron Man, is an updated version of the 2010 game based on the first two movies, with LED lights and redesigned back-box. The pinball renaissance has also enabled Stern to produce Vault editions, of which there have been two so far. Pinball is built to order, and orders are increasing.

While pinball is nowhere close to getting back to its heyday numbers it’s not only off life support but actively healthy, causing Stern to move to a new location that’s three times bigger than the old one and expand to two assembly lines that not only increase production capacity but employ more people. This helps drive the collector market, which has been booming as well, and Stern helps keep the market fed with the three versions of the tables at different price points. Private ownership is always nice to see but pinball works best when a lot of people can play it, such as in pinball bars and other public locations. Since then it’s been growing steadily each year, with competitive events and tournaments springing up everywhere and more locations stocking a nice selection of tables. Pinball started coming out of its slump around 2009, once the country began recovering from the economic slump it was in. In addition to covering Ghostbusters, we also talked about pinball in general, how the scene has been coming back to life in recent years, and how Stern has been handling the expanding market. It’s a very similar trick to the Pinball 2000 games of Star Wars Episode I and Revenge from Mars, except in a very small section of the table rather than covering the whole thing. An image on a mini-screen is reflected off a piece of clear plastic to make it look like an animated ghost is hovering over the lane, and sensors let the game know when the ball has passed by so the ghost can go splat.

The coolest upgrade on Premium/LE, though, has to be the Ecto Goggles shot, which uses the Pepper’s Ghost trick to project an image onto a lens over the lane. Adding to the general Ghostbustery-ness is a huge library of lines from the movie, with new custom dialogue from Winston as voiced by the original actor, Ernie Hudson. The design was to create a fully featured world under glass, and the board does an amazing job of creating a pinball table-sized version of the Ghostbuster’s New York City. There are endless details everywhere you look, including the public library and Ghostbusters headquarters, a mini-cityscape over the bumper field and a big red containment unit. Everything on the playfield is designed to have a unified style from the all-original art created specifically for the game, to the three variations on the cabinet art between Pro, Premium, and LE editions, and even the bumper covers and plastic table toys.

The game is being designed by John Trudeau, known for Creature of the Black Lagoon, The Machine: Bride of Pinbot and, more recently, WWE Wrestlemania and Mustang, with art by the incredibly talented Zombie Yeti, almost known for Magic Girl Pinball before that project sadly crashed and burned.

Ghostbusters is Stern’s next major table after Game of Thrones, and it’s getting the full deluxe treatment to go with it. Stern took the time to chat with us about the new Ghostbusters table and all the work that went into creating it, as well as a range of other topics as the conversation careened all over the company’s output and recent history. It’s been one of the least-secret secrets in pinball that Stern’s next big table is Ghostbusters, but as of today it’s time to take the lid off the rumors and show off all the hard work the team has been up to.
